The original E.L. Doheny Steinway was built in 1902 for the Southern California oil millionaire as a gift for his wife, Estelle. This immaculate design was painstakingly recreated in 2009. Covered in 22 karat gold leaf, cherubic paintings set within scrolled frames surround the case and the trellised music desk. The original features a painting on the underside of the lid of the Doheny mansion with Mrs. Estelle Doheny walking in the garden. Sculpted heads of the Dohenys’ nine-year old son appear at both sides of the keyboard. The replica completed in 2009 updates those personal references with a painting of the customer’s stately home and figurative cherub carvings. This opulent five-legged art case took an impressive 24 months to complete in all its lavish resplendency, and it bears true testament to Steinway’s consistent excellence in executing the most extraordinary of all designs, past or present.
