The Art Case Collection - The Julianne

Steinway & Sons Proudly Announces the Sale of This Fine Instrument

By Terrance Hunt
Model O

Henry Z. Steinway Limited EditionFurniture designer, Terrance Hunt, collaborated in the design of the Model O “The Julianne” piano.

The case is constructed of African mahogany enhanced to suggest a Chris-Craft type color and coated in a high-sheen polyester resin reminiscent of the lacquer finish of a wooden speedboat. The mahogany is inlaid in the fashion of such a craft, and the lid in particular resembles the decking one would expect to see. The music desk has a clever windshield look and actually folds down as the screen on a wooden runabout would.

The rim of the piano is laid-up like a wooden hull. The case displays a speedboat-type curvature that translates into a rounded-off version of what would be the waterline of a boat, complete with All-American red and white line detail below. Like the tapering on a boat, the trim is thicker at the keyboard end and diminishes toward the rear of the case. The cast aluminum legs have a sail shape and lend the piano the look of something racing across the water.

The bench resembles the stern of a classic lakester. The seat includes a short back and aluminum legs, and is tufted with hand-stitched beige leather. The rear of the bench is patterned after a class stern and has a space for the owner to spell out the name of the yacht on which the piano will set.
